One of the primary uses of the Islesford Neighborhood House is as a home for the island library. The Islesford Library is a public lending library available to all Islesford residents and visitors to the island. Originally just a 12 x 17 foot room, the library was expanded once in 1989 and again in 1998. Today’s library is three times the size of the original and offers a collection of over 7000 articles for borrowing, including books (of course!), DVDs, CDs, VHS and audiotapes. Also available for borrowing are items used to measure home energy efficiency, namely two kilowatt meters that measure electricity use of appliances and an infrared scanner to identify cold air leaks. The library has a desktop computer and laptop available to its patrons, both with high-speed Internet access. There is a wireless Internet signal (inside & outside) for those patrons providing their own laptops, and printer and copier are also available. Consistently ranked in the top ten for circulation per capita among Maine libraries, the Islesford Library is open year-round on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with increased hours during the summer. When the library is open, visitors also have access to the Islesford Historical Society collection. The library is also the sponsor of “Movie Night” at the Islesford Neighborhood House. The library’s adopt-a-book program is currently looking for “parents”. Books can be adopted for $15. For more information, or to speak with librarian Cindy Thomas, please call (207) 244-9565.
